Honestly we had the BEST time. Low key, cheap, and close to home - made for an easy night out and yet a nice break from the regular day to day. David went up way early and picked out our site, which was pretty large and not too far from the bathrooms or a stream (my request). We set up our tents and got the fire going for hot dogs and later smores. It was Sam and Sophie's first time camping and it was very fun to get to experience it with them. Sophie just may not remember, as she's only 4 months old, but we'll have a few pictures at least for her later on.
As during the summer the sun doesn't go down till 9pm, it was hard to get Sam to sleep as the rest of us enjoyed chatting around the fire. He'd poke his little head out of the tent window every few minutes and then play with the flashlight or just talk with himself or ask us questions and as most 2 year olds would do. We had a good laugh as he was just too cute. Finally his parents had to start threatening him to sleep or they'd go home, and he didn't want to do that at all. Not like any of them really got any sleep with a 2 1/2 and 4 month old, but they survived. And sadly I didn't sleep too much either, and I think I just forget how lightly I sleep outside in a strange area. David was out, lucky him.
That morning we got up and had muffins, took a walk around the area, and then even had hot dogs again after awhile. We taught Sam how to feed a squirrel a Dorito, and he thought that was the best!
A few weeks later, we really wanted to repeat it and camp again, but after a more "honest" conversation, we decided, forget the sleeping (we did that already once this year and plus we had a reunion to be early the next day) - lets just do a Bonfire! So we found another place nearby in the Cottonwood Canyons again just for the Bonfire experience. We met up there around 4:30 and stayed well until 10pm and wanted to just keep chatting... but we were out of wood so it was time to get back home. It was still a great time as we did hot dogs again and smores later on. I held Sophie for a good long time, man, I'm so lucky! David and Sam would go exploring around our little area. And most of us took a turn checking out the cave near our fire. We chatted mostly about Texas because Jon just got a job there and they are headed out! We are SOOOO going to miss them, but we are so happy that on the job front it finally is working out. Moving states within a couple weeks a VERY stressful, but they did it! We also played Uno when it got dark and as Sam called it when he read it on the box "uh-no" cute. (Just to brag a bit, our Sam can read, totally, since just over 2 years old. And not just the hop, pop, rock words - but big words! And he can tell you all about the water cycle, electricity and planets - so he's smarter than me! His doctor said he's never seen anyone so smart --- Okay, that will so not be my child someday, but hey, how amazing is Sam!?)
Here are a few pictures taken from the Bonfire, which took place August 17th. I was trying to be more of a "photographer" with all the nature stuff, it was fun :)
